Saturday 21st April saw Walton Casuals Seniors play a vital home fixture against 3rd placed Cray Wanderers FC in the Bostik League.
Another big crowd had assembled in anticipation of watching two teams both needing to win…and what a classic game it was!
Casuals went one down almost immediately, then equalised, then went 2-1 behind, then equalised, then went 3-2 up and then 4-2 up…and all within the space of 19 minutes!
The match continued in the same vein but everyone’s shooting boots seemed to have been left in the changing rooms at half-time. It was a huge relief when Josh Kelly – after his 15 minute hat-trick in the first half – added a personal fourth and a fifth for the Casuals, late in the second period.
In the context of the game though, and considering what had happened in the first-half, it was then a brave move by Anthony Gale, the Casuals’ manager, to start making substitutions and more to the point taking off experienced Isthmian League footballers and replacing them with promising U18 Juniors‘ players.
